Chapter Thirteen

Adriana couldn’t sleep. Whether it was because of the mind-blowing sex they only stopped having an hour ago, or the stress of being so close to finding Edwina only for her to slip away, she didn’t know. But there was no point just lying there. With the amount of tossing and turning she was doing, it would only be a matter of time before she woke Jessica up. Taking her phone with her, Adriana went into the bathroom hoping a long hot soak would do the trick. Pouring a handful of Epsom salts onto the palm of her hand, Adriana held them under the tap until they had disappeared. As she stepped into the bath Adriana knew there was more to her agitation than finding Edwina. At the back of her mind, day and night, was the knowledge that she needed to make a decision about Hugo before she returned home. Putting it off was only making things worse for her. Could she face her fears and tell her parents she was a lesbian?

It was times like this that she wished Beatrice was still alive to guide her, as she was the only family member Adriana had confided in about her sexuality. Beatrice had also been aware of the ‘plot’ to get her to marry Hugo, but surprisingly she had said nothing. Which was unusual for Beatrice because she normally had a lot to say about everything, Adriana remembered fondly.

No doubt Alice had asked Beatrice not to interfere and her grandmother had obeyed Alice’s wishes. So Adriana had never asked Beatrice what to do about Hugo, thinking they would have that conversation one day. But that was the big lie life played on humans. People had a false sense of security in thinking they always had tomorrow. As Adriana had found out much too late; there was no such guarantee.

The water enshrouded Adriana’s body and she dunked her head underneath it, in the hope of the silence bringing her more clarity. The transition into married life might have been easier had she not met Jessica. Her reason for this admission was simple. While her number one attraction was to women, up until now she hadn’t met anyone who had blown her mind. Who had made her want to sacrifice giving up a life of security and stability.

Usually her romances were kept short and shallow. Adriana had never been in love.

Not once.

So how could she miss something that she’d never experienced? Yes, she knew sleeping with Hugo would be a massive sacrifice on her behalf, but how bad could it be? Lots of lesbians had what she termed ‘convenience relationships’ with men. They went in with their eyes wide open and got what they wanted out of life; children, a stable marriage and a home.

But was that really what she wanted? Even if it wasn’t with Hugo, could she see herself committing to that kind of life with another woman. She searched her mind for the answer and wasn’t surprised it came back with a resounding yes.
